During the fall season, the Mt. Carmel Marching Band and Color Guard compete in high-profile field show tournaments against premier ensembles from across Southern California. In addition to their competitive circuit, the ensemble is a cornerstone of campus life, performing at varsity football games, regional parades, and community events.
As a two-time Grammy Signature Schools award winner with a storied 45+ year history, Mt. Carmel’s music department is widely recognized as one of the elite high school instrumental programs in the state. Beyond musical accolades, the program is a haven for academic excellence; many of Mt. Carmel’s top-achieving students anchor the ensemble, fostering a welcoming, disciplined, and close-knit community where lifelong friendships are built.
Foundational Leadership: The program's rich history of artistic excellence was largely shaped under the guidance of two-time Grammy-winning director Warren Torns (1944–2022).
Silver Screen Appearance (1988): Under the direction of Tom Cole, the Marching Sundevils were featured in the opening scenes of the Columbia Pictures film Little Nikita, starring Sidney Poitier and River Phoenix.
Holiday Bowl Hosts (2005): The Mt. Carmel Instrumental Music Department served as the prestigious host for the national Holiday Bowl High School Band Competition.
Rose Parade Tradition (2006): The Marching Sundevils marked a historic milestone by making their 11th appearance in the world-renowned Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.
Fiesta Bowl National Champions (2010): Mt. Carmel captured the overall Fiesta Bowl National Band Championship title, placing 1st in the parade review and a razor-thin 2nd in the field tournament by a mere 0.05 points.
SCSBOA Championship Dynasty (2015–2019): Under the direction of now-retired director Garry McPherson, the Marching Band and Color Guard captured the SCSBOA 6A Division Gold Medal five times, consistently defeating the top twelve advanced programs in Southern California.
Today, the band room walls tell the story of this legacy, packed to the ceiling with decades of championship trophies that outpace any other program on campus.
